1. Rahm’s Breakthrough: We talk about it all the time, but I’m not sure we can overstate how well Jon Rahm has performed both in 2022 and over the past few years. An example of this came up when I was researching some numbers in this week’s event, which Rahm never played. If you look at the last 20 tackles between the players present on this pitch, Rahm is unmatched.

Rahm is on a four-time winning streak as the third-best dribbler in the field in his last five tournaments. What’s the chance that a below average player can compete with this?! The flip side of this statistic is that, you know, Rahm hasn’t actually won an event since last year’s US Open, which reveals just how difficult it is to win and it seems he has to. . Bay Hill, if it grows fast and sure as it is clear, is a prime point to do so.
2. Play long iron: In addition to the potential wind and solid conditions we’ve seen recently at this course, Bay Hill’s other defensive ability is the demand it places on long iron play. Because all four of its par 3s are 200 yards or more, this is the rare PGA Tour course that forces you to hit a 4 or 5 in some uncomfortable situations. According to my colleague Rick Gehman, 35% of shots at Bay Hill come from 200 yards or more (average is about 27%) and 19% come from 200-225 (average 11%). This is definitely something to keep in mind when trying to determine champions, and has in fact greatly influenced my pick this week (more on that below).
3. Rory journey: So far, we haven’t seen much Rory McIlroy in the US in 2022. It’s March now, and he’s only played four rounds on the PGA Tour (T10 at the Genesis Invitational two weeks ago). Obviously, there are always questions about McIlroy in the lead up masters, and although he hasn’t been featured much, what he has accomplished so far has been remarkable. Three consecutive top 15s open for 2022 (two in Europe), and his stats are off the charts (1.3, 3.0, 2.4 SG respectively). Also, he’s completely annihilated in Bay Hill. Of the players on the course with at least 10 innings played on this course, only two have scored more than 2.0 strokes per round and McIlroy is inching toward 3.0. His last five starts here have all been top 10, but despite all of this, it looks like he’s coming into the spotlight at a pivotal moment in which he’s already flourished. certainty.
