2022-2023 GMC Hummer EV recalled for battery sealing

GM is recalling most of the GMC Hummer EV SUVs and BrightDrop EV600 electric vehicles it has built to date, because of an issue that could allow water to enter the battery packs of large off-road or delivery vehicles.

It highlights that in any clean technology and production approach, there can be some fundamental production obstacles that need to be overcome first. The GMC Hummer EV and BrightDrop . Truck marks the first use of the GM Ultium push strategy for electric vehicles—And the large format pocket cells are manufactured by Ultium Cells LLC, a battery manufacturer joint venture with LG. That includes a host of new technologies and techniques, including what it claims to be an industry first wireless battery management system and a next-generation heat system, which relies on a heat pump plus an oil-to-liquid heat exchanger, could give these vehicles the edge in real-world range.

The recall affects 735 GMC Hummer EVs from 2022 and 2023 and 89 GM electric trucks from 2022. According to GM. The recall documents show that the battery case manufacturer Magna International and GM reported that changes to the sealing process were made in August, when they were investigating the issue.

GM says it is aware of three confirmed reports in which water has entered the tank as a result of the condition. In those two cases, the car wouldn’t start, while in the other case, at GM’s proof-of-concept facility, the car lost its engine while driving.

If water is actually causing the battery problem, GM notes that “one or more trouble lights may come on” with a warning message displayed on the driver display.

To fix the problem, GM will ask dealers to inspect the battery case. Dealers were notified of the issue on October 13, while owners’ notices will begin on November 28. Motorists should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) at GM . Owner Centeror they can call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

GM has addressed another issue that could potentially allow water into the Hummer EV and BrightDrop packages. In August, GM confirmed that water could leak through the high-voltage connector into the canister in some vehicles. That issue was resolved with a trip to the dealer to have the sealant added to the connector.

With upcoming versions Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV Capable of using versions of the Hummer EV architecture and dual-stage battery packs, these small-scale recalls could save GM some much larger setbacks as it scales.
