We used dog food with Salmon listed as the number one ingredient. We also feed our GS 3 times a day with the smallest portion before going to bed. Changing from 2 to 3 feedings per day makes a huge difference. The last feeding before bedtime is only a small amount so that the baby does not go hungry. We also added cooked chicken.

After trying many Rx and non-Rx brands, my family nurturer did the best Purina Pro Plan for Sensitive Skin and Stomach (salmon and rice, large variety). I think dogs, like people, are individuals – what’s best for one may not work for another.

Veterinary check first One of our shepherds currently can’t handle grains (non-EPI) and he does great with grain-free treats (Natural Balance duck and sweet potatoes) with no seeds are not good for young dogs, but he started on it at 8, so we feel good about it

Solid Gold Sensitive Stomach is the only food our GSD can eat. After 6 months and trying 5 different stomach upset diets, this was the only one that worked for him. We even tried the chicken and rice at home. The vet recommended Solid Gold and it worked! He’s been up there for two and a half years with no problems.

Cooking house. I usually make rice with meat like salmon or chicken. Vegetables and some braised chicken. Whole eggs (with shell) and some vitamins and spices. You can find delicious recipes online. It’s really not that expensive either, especially when you buy in bulk. You can also prepare meals so that you can easily make a worthwhile amount of food at once.

I give my son purebred duck or bison Canidae. It’s expensive and I need to try and find something less expensive. I’ve got 5 gsd and all of them are fine but this guy can’t stand something in it. I have tried all of them. I also used Wellness Simple, it’s good but I can’t afford it
