12 Best Laptops (2021): MacBook, Windows Machine, Chromebook

The Pixelbook Go is Google’s latest vision of what a Chromebook should be like. Unlike previous attempts, Go does not search for the stars. Its price reflects that, and it starts at $350 less than its predecessor. However, if you liked the premium specs of the original Pixelbook, you can Order Go Premium with Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB internal memory and 4K screen.

The Go’s design is a lot more functional than it looks, and the interestingly contoured bottom is the only thing that sets it apart from standard laptops. The base model uses an Intel Core M3 chip, but we recommend a Core i5. You’ll get 8 GB of RAM, which should be enough for the average Chromebook use.

Chrome OS has evolved significantly in recent years and feels very mature. Support for Linux also makes Chromebooks great for lightweight development. Using Android apps can still be a frustrating exercise, but things have improved in recent releases.

Specs to look for: Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD

Another great Chromebook: Want something newer? Take a look at Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 (7/10, Recommend with WIRED) for $700. It features a premium, lightweight all-aluminum construction with a sleek minimalist design. It also has a bright, sharp display. The model I recommend has an Intel Core i3 and 8 gigabytes of RAM inside.
