This ranks as mine favorite wool base when I tested a series last year. I like the thin sole for active pursuits, such as climbing and hiking, and the Merino 150 is the perfect combination of warmth and breathability.

Likewise, the Smartwool’s bottom layers are warm but not too warm to make you sweat. There’s just a little bit of nylon here to make them fit and stretch to avoid bunching underneath the top pants.

For those who prefer synthetic fabrics for the base layers, the Marmot Polartec is made from mid-weight polyester, with a bit of Spandex mixed in for a snug feel. Synthetic fabrics dry faster than wool, although they do not insulate when wet the way wool does.

I like synthetically insulated gobies like Featherless Hoody in wet or snowy environments where temperatures can fluctuate around freezing, as they dry faster than goose feathers. There is also a convertible version for $131 ($44 off) if you are not a fan of hoods.

Fuego is packed with 800 pieces of goose down, treated with a durable water-repellent finish to help reduce the amount of moisture it absorbs. Load capacity is a measure of the ratio between the warmth to weight and the compressibility of the goose feather. A high number (such as Fuego’s 800) means it will be warmer than a garment that has a smaller quantity and is more compressible in your pack. The Men’s hoodies are also on saleand there are convertible versions available for women and man. If you buy a Cotopaxi item for $75 or more at Moosejaw before February 7, you can score free Bataan hip pack (worth $30) by entering code COTOPAXIGIFT at checkout (as long as it’s in stock).

The lightweight fleece still holds a place in my heart as the layer of insulation between the subfloor and the coat (or raincoat). Fleece tends to be less bulky as a puffy middle layer, and it’s durable and dries quickly.

If you need something more durable, the Yukon Extremes parka has about 14 ounces of synthetic insulation inside a 500-gene Cordura nylon shell. Unlike gentle hiking gobies, you won’t have to worry about a tree branch or fence post cutting your coat if you’re out doing yard work.

Rain jacket deals

Just in time for the rainy season, some favorite raincoat on sale right now.

MicroGravity (8/10, Recommend with WIRED) is a lightweight three-layer case, designed for climbing. The helmet-compatible hood and its ability to slip into your pocket make it a worthwhile addition to your hiking or climbing pack, but it’ll also serve you well on days off. rain in the city.

WIRED Senior Contributor editor reviews Adrienne So prefers PreCip Eco for its PFC-free recycled nylon fabric. Its seams are fully taped, so water won’t leak in inclement weather, and it features an underarm zipper to let the jacket air out during strenuous activity. The Men’s sizes are on sale here.

Helium is – surprisingly – a very light jacket, weighing only about 6 ounces, depending on size. While it doesn’t have as many features as heavier jackets, it still has a zip fastening and hood, and is fully stitched. The male version available on sale for $119 in limited colors.
