Italian pizza experts behind Top 50 Pizzas released their 2022 survey to rank the best pizzerias in the world.
Inspectors from 50 Top Pizza were invited to review a pizzeria based on:
- Customer service
- Cleanliness and beauty of the environment
- Taste and overall health of food
#1 city with best pizzerias: New York City, Rome (tie)
The best city for pizza in 2022 is a combination of New York City and Rome, Italy.
Each city has 5 of the best pizzerias in the world, more than any other city on the Top 50 Pizza list.
In New York, the top pizzeria is Una Pizza Napoletana. The Lower East Side eatery is famous for its 12-inch wood-burning Neapolitan pies by self-taught chef Anthony Mangieri.
Other restaurants ranked in NYC include Ribalta NYC, Song’E Napule, Keste Fultonand Work.
According to the survey, the top pizzerias in Rome are Seu Pizza Illuminati. The restaurant’s chef, Pier Daniele Seu, is best known for creating ultra-light dough and using experimental coatings.
Some other pizzerias ranked on the list in Rome include 180g Pizzeria Romana, Qvinto, Sbancoand Sant’Isidoro – Pizza & Bolle.

After NYC and Rome, some of the cities with the most pizzerias in the 50 Top Pizza survey were Naples, London, and Tokyo, with four restaurants each making the list.
Notably, Naples has all four pizzerias in the top 10 of the overall list.
According to the survey, the undisputed “birthplace of pizza” is home to four of the best pizzerias in the world: 50 Kalò, 10 Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria, Francesco & Salvatore Salvo, and 94 La Notizia.
São Paulo, Brazil, also deserves a mention as the city has three pizzerias that ranked in the top 100 of the survey.
